How to be disciplined when you study
HOW TO BE DISCIPLINED DURING PREPARATION FOR AN EXAM
You checked your wrists watch or your phone for the time. “Its 12pm” and then you said, “OOOhhhh!!! time is too fast these days, abegi!!!! I will read when its 2pm“.
“Its 2pm” and you said to yourself again, “Haaaa!!! I don’t know where the time is running to ooo, wooo!!! I will read when its 4pm.” and this continues until exams are knocking on your front door.
It might seem funny but we are all guilty of that. You strategize and make plans on how you will study for an exam but still yet you find yourself doing irrelevant things. We are here to give you some tips that will help you stay disciplined when preparing for an exam.
Why Self-discipline is very crucial
The Merriam-Webster define self-discipline as the “correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement.” This definition clearly shows the importance of self-discipline.
It implies that we have to regulate ourselves or stop ourselves from certain behaviors if we are to improve. Relating this to studying, it clearly means that we have to stop certain things or take up new things while studying so as to get the positive result we want.
Moreover, self-discipline also helps in increasing your self-esteem because you are able to achieve the goals you set for yourself. With this, you get a boost in your confidence.
There are four major distractions all student are faced with when trying to prepare for an exam. They are:
- Social Media(WHATSAPP ESPECIALLY)
- Too much sleep
but with self-discipline and determination, these four disturbances can be conquered.
HERE IS HOW TO HAVE SELF DISCIPLINE WHEN YOU STUDY
1.GET RID OF TEMPTATIONS
Self-discipline becomes very easy when the things or people that distract you are out of sight, out of reach or even out of ear-shot.
Make sure before you start studying your mobiles phones are switched off or its completely out of site.
For some of you that put your phone very close to you and have active internet. Immediately you get a notification sound that urges to reply the message is always there. Therefore, it is advised to put your mobile phones away when studying.
GET RID OF OTHER TEMPTATIONS TOO
2.STOP THE HABIT OF “PERFECT TIMING”
You do not need to wait for a perfect time to start studying for your exams. Use the available time to study for your exams not waiting for a perfect time.
Yes, we all want that time when we will be gingered when our body, spirit, and mind will be synchronize to study. Until then, you might not want to study.
Most times, the so-called “perfect timing” might not show up. Probably until the exam is in a few weeks or it might not even come due to unforeseen circumstances.
Therefore, the habit of perfect timing should be stopped instead of disciplining yourself to read when there is available time. It pays more.
3.Nourish your body well
Good nourishment is very crucial when studying. Studies have shown that when self-disciplined is being practiced you used up a lot of energy from your mental power. Therefore, good feeding habit is necessary.
Also, when you are hungry or malnourished you aren’t always happy and things upset you easily you won’t be able to practice self-discipline in this condition. Therefore, its necessary that you nourish yourself properly.
4. Take breaks very important
As the popular Nigerian saying goes “Body no be firewood“.
Yes, learn to rest at certain time intervals. Especially after long hours of studying. The importance of taking breaks in the form of rest cannot be over-emphasized as it helps to improve your mental performance.
It also refreshes you and prepares you for another studying round with better assimilating power.
5.Acknowledge your victory
When you are able to accomplish a certain task you give to yourself commend yourself, give yourself smiles, acknowledge yourself.
Self-encouragement and commendment helps to tell yourself that you are fit for the task ahead even if they might seem tougher.
This is because as you journey through the school of self-discipline taking cognizance of small victory and acknowledgment is important.
As the popular saying goes “Do not neglect little beginnings”Self-discipline is not what you are born with. Self-discipline is among the few virtues that you learn until it becomes part of you.
Starting small entails that you give yourself a little target at a time and as you accomplish those ones you increase the task and set higher goals for yourself.
If you continue like this you will see that self-discipline not just to study your exams but for other aspects of your life becomes easier. If you want to be disciplined when reading, try reading for 30 minutes without any form of distraction and with maximum concentration.
When you have accomplished that, be happy and commend yourself as you have started climbing the ladder of self-discipline aiming at the top.
